About Black Silk Friesians
We are a boutique operation based in the South San Francisco Bay Area. We own all of our horses and occasionally will offer well-developed horses for sale to approved homes. You can see our horses at shows and events where we promote and showcase the breed and educate people on their rich history and unique personalities. Contact us to find out where you can meet our horses in person. This year, we will be riding at dressage shows and in costume at various events. We are also available for photoshoots, filming, and private events.
We are Business Members of the Friesian Horse Association of North America (FHANA.)
Black Silk Friesians is founded on the love of Friesians and our desire to see them achieve their potential. We have known of beautiful horses that are in pain from poor foundational training, and some new owners are challenged with a lack of high level training available to them. Sometimes just some education about the breed helps readjust an approach. They are magnificent horses with incredible grace and ability, we want you to experience the very best of the breed within your horse as we have been able to do.
The breed was almost extinct at one point, but now is becoming more popular and no longer in danger due to a healthy representation all over the world. Friesians are one of the most expensive breeds, and many people genuinely want the horse of their dreams as adults and are willing to make the investment in a Friesian. Because many of these horses are imported, training styles differ in various countries and some people buy Friesians with the expectation they are getting a finished or very well along horse. But they soon find out there is more work to do. Some of that boils down to what people are looking for in North America and that can be quite different. And many times new owners want a more versatile horse that can be more of a companion horse in addition or instead of a performance horse.
We found some of the more challenging aspects of Friesian responses that might come up from time to time were just omitted from marketing materials. Ignoring the negative doesn't make it go away. So we are honest about those things--Friesians are sensitive and very aware of their surroundings. They are strong willed, and some might need a confident handler. They are big, and all of them are not calm and lazy as believed. The good thing is none of the challenges are unmanageable, it is a settling in on both sides in come cases. You just need an expert to guide you and help you set realistic expectations while you come into the relationship you desire with your horse.
Your investment starts with the purchase, now invest in the relationship that you want for many years to come. Both you and your horse deserve the best you each can give.
